Pitchers carry Cochise to sweep of Eastern Arizona


IMG_0818THATCHER — The Cochise College baseball team pulled off an important conference sweep Saturday at Eastern Arizona College, winning the first game 2-1 and the second 5-1.

In game one, Cochise starting pitcher Xavier Altamirano went 6 2/3 strong innings and and the Apaches were down by a run before rallying in the sixth to score two.

Eastern Arizona scored in the first inning on a fielder’s choice. In the sixth, singles by Sean DeSoto, Louis Boyd and Austin Nelson loaded the bases for Nick Borowski, who was hit by a pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly by Darick Hall to give Cochise the lead.

Altamirano gave up just six hits, no walks and struck out five to earn the win.

An ace performance by Kade Wagner led Cochise in game two. Wagner allowed no earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out eight in the complete nine-inning performance.

The game was scoreless until a four-run fifth inning for Cochise. Jovan Ewusie kicked it off with a home run to left field. A single by Hall into right field scored two more, and a Jake Luna single brought in Borowski. Cochise scored again in the top of the sixth on an Eastern Arizona error.

The Gila Monsters scored their lone run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out Cochise error.

The wins improve the Apaches’ record to 26-20 overall and 15-15 in conference play. On Sunday, the Apaches host University of Arizona Club in a noon doubleheader on the Douglas Campus, and the Apaches are home again on Tuesday against Arizona Western starting at noon.
