Prior to Cochise, Rick Smith established the Central Wyoming College rodeo team and spent 17 years at the helm of the program. During his tenure, 13 Central Wyoming teams won Central Rocky Mountain Region championships, 13 finished in the top 10 at the College National Finals Rodeo, and nine individuals came away with national titles. Six alumni athletes qualified for the Wranger National Finals Rodeo.
Smith was a professional rodeo cowboy for nearly 15 years in saddle bronc riding. He qualified for the National Finals Rodeo six times and won championships in rodeos held in Houston, San Antonio and Tucson.

Lynn Smith is an accomplished rodeo athlete and instructor. While attending Central Wyoming College, Smith qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo four times, and won National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association championship titles in goat tying, breakaway roping and all-around cowgirl. She was a Central Rocky Mountain Region champion twice in goat tying.
She attended University of Wyoming for her final year of college and returned to Central Wyoming as a coach in 2000. In the last 12 years, 11 of her women’s squads have qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo, and of those, four have finished in the top 10, including Reserve National Women’s Team Champions in 2012.
In 1999, Smith started her “Better Basics” goat tying clinics, open to girls 6 and older across the United States and Canada, which offer instruction on technique, the importance of physical conditioning, mental toughness and horsemanship.
