Cochise College Apaches - 2007 ACCAC Champions

The Cochise College baseball program has had a proud and rich baseball tradition over the past two decades. The 2006-2007 Apaches won the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and played in their third Region I championship in four years, ultimately losing to Central Arizona College. Previously, the Apaches won back-to-back Region I championships and made consecutive trips to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo., in 1988 and 1989, finishing seventh and third in the nation. In 1993, the Apaches produced another outstanding season that concluded with a runner-up finish in the Region I finals. Cochise was within one game of a return trip to the Junior College World Series.

pitchThe 2006-2007 Apaches closed the regular season with a 40-15 record and went on to beat Pima Community College in the Region I playoffs before losing to Central in the final. The team ranked as high as No. 2 in a National Junior College Athletic Association poll. Year-end honors for individual Cochise College players included:

  • Will Campbell, First Team All-ACCAC Outfield, All-Region I
  • Rafael Valenzuela, First Team All-ACCAC Infield, All-Region I
  • Tim Winslow, First Team All-ACCAC Designated Hitter
  • Cody Walden, Second Team All-ACCAC Pitcher, Second Team All-Region I
  • Coach Todd Inglehart, ACCAC Coach of the Year

Over the years, Cochise College has established itself as a powerhouse in one of the best junior college conferences in the nation. During Coach Todd Inglehart’s seven-year tenure at Cochise College, he has had many players move on to the Division I level. Due to the Apaches’ work ethic and hard-nose style of play, many Division I schools are very interested in getting players from our program. Over the past years, schools such as Arizona State, Kentucky, South Alabama, Louisiana-Monroe, UC Santa Barbara, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada-Reno, New Mexico State, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Nichols State, Penn State and George Mason have given scholarships to players from Cochise.

sliderCochise is a two-year, fully accredited community college in southeastern Arizona near the city of Douglas, approximately one hour and forty-five minutes from Tucson. Equipped with dormitories and a full-service cafeteria, Cochise College is an excellent institution offering associate’s degrees and transfer programs, as well as technical and vocational training programs. Apache coaches stress academic responsibility and achievements as top priorities for their student-athletes.

Cochise College competes in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC), perhaps America’s finest junior college baseball conference. Members include Arizona Western, Central Arizona, Chandler-Gilbert, Eastern Arizona, Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, Gateway, Scottsdale, South Mountain, and Yavapai colleges, as well as Cochise College. The conference and regional champion is regularly a top contender for the JUCO national championship. In addition, the ACCAC is one of the conferences most heavily recruited by professional baseball scouts and university coaches.

Apache field is a highly attractive junior college facility located on the Douglas Campus. This scenic facility is complemented with two batting tunnels and five bullpen mounds. Students have access to an Olympic-size swimming pool, a highly productive weight room, a wellness center, and a trainer’s room.

With an average temperature of 78 degrees throughout the year, southern Arizona is blessed with some of the finest baseball playing weather in America, enabling the Apache program to operate throughout the entire school calendar year.

Athletic scholarships are awarded to qualified, recruited student-athletes. Apache coaches determine scholarship amounts and offerings based on evaluations of talent and consideration of available resources. In addition, other scholarships, grants, waivers, loans and work-study arrangements are possible through the Cochise College Financial Aid Office. All prospective student-athletes should complete and file the Family Financial Aid packet to determine whether or not they qualify for financial assistance.

The Apache fall program begins in late August and runs until the week before finals in December. The fall schedule includes tryouts, practice, intrasquads, and up to a 20-game fall schedule. A Red vs. White World Series concludes the official fall season in December. The spring schedule consists of 56 games, 38 of which are ACCAC conference games. Non-conference games are played against out-of-state teams from California, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Nevada, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Washington.

Cochise College offers a high-quality academic experience and an excellent baseball program that is committed to the development of the individual athlete, as well as producing championship teams. Cochise is the place where student athletes can successfully pursue their academic and baseball goals.
