The 2007-2008 Season The 2006-2007 regular season finale saw the Yavapai Lady Roughriders (24-5) visiting the Cochise College Lady Apaches (19-10)in the last home game of the season with huge implications across the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). Cochise College was tied for third place in league play with Arizona Western College. A loss would mean the end of the season for the Lady Apaches; a win would send them to the playoffs. As fate would have it, No. 2 Yavapai was at Cochise, and No. 1 Central Arizona College was at Arizona Western. In their first meeting Yavapai College had a decisive victory over the Lady Apaches. The Lady Apaches had one of their best defensive performances of the year in their second meeting and came out victorious over the Lady Roughriders. Arizona Western fell to Central Arizona that same night. Cochise College finished the regular season at 20 wins and 10 losses, and the Lady Apaches found themselves going to the NJCAA Region I Division I playoff semi-final game. Four days later, the Lady Apaches traveled to Prescott for their semi-final game with Yavapai College, with the winner to face the No. 2 nationally ranked Central Arizona Lady Vaqueras. Yavapai College, heavily favored and playing at home, emerged as the victors. The Lady Apaches of Cochise College for the first time in 17 years had a 20-win season and for the third consecutive year made the semi-final playoff game in NJCAA Region I. Great year! The five returning sophomores from the 2006-2007 campaign want to make it four years in a row to the playoffs. Led by all-conference forward Ashley Jackson, guards Mary Leal, Cherelle Rosales, and Lavina Price, and forward Erin Murphy, this year’s team is ready to meet the challenges of a tough ACCAC schedule and an extremely difficult non-conference schedule. Newcomers to the Lady Apaches include point guards Simone Buckhanan from Albuquerque and Selena Florez from Hobbs, NM. Both these players bring speed, quickness and three-point shooting to our squad. Forwards Leah Hernandez and Brenda Portillo of El Paso are tough match-ups for opposing teams because of their speed and shooting abilities. At the post position, red-shirt freshman Katelyn Wilson from Alamogordo, NM, and Margaret Gadomski from Albuquerque give us strength and aggressiveness inside. Rounding out our freshman list is 6-1 Egle Karolyte from Lithuania. She has an excellent three-point shot and can also score inside; she is a multi-dimensional player and should be a tremendous asset to our program. The schedule is set, the players are ready, and admission is free. Grab some popcorn, a hot dog, and a cold drink and take in the energy and excitement every Wednesday and Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. on the Douglas Campus of Cochise College. See you at the Apache Stronghold Gymnasium. Go Apaches!
