Excellence in Assessment AwardIn spring 2007, the Assessment Committee created the Excellence in Assessment award to recognize, annually, a department whose program has performed outstanding work in assessing student learning outcomes. As a tribute to the college’s commitment to outstanding assessment, a plaque honoring the recipients is displayed in each campus library. Below is the list of recipients and compilation of comments generated during the Assessment Committee's nomination and selection process. 2007 - English Composition The English Composition program is praised for involving their entire faculty in the assessment process, for making significant changes designed to improve student learning, and for dramatically increasing the communication and cooperation within their department. The English Composition assessment process serves as a model for other programs to emulate. From the beginning, the program’s assessment reports have been thorough and their action plans geared to closing the loop in improving student learning. The department has developed best practices workshops and has worked to instill more uniform instructional requirements and grading standards in all sections. The program is truly deserving of the honor of being the first recipient of this annual award. 2008 - American Sign Language The American Sign Language (ASL) Program is praised for being one of the first Cochise College programs to evidence a clear understanding of the overall goal of assessment: to improve student learning. It was also one of the first programs to demonstrate a serious commitment to the process of assessment. The ASL Program revealed this understanding and commitment in its first assessment cycle by designing and implementing a clear and effective assessment plan, conducting a thoughtful analysis of assessment results, and launching an action plan clearly designed to improve student learning. Since that first assessment cycle, the program has continued to refine its asssessment process, adjusting it to accomodate changing circumstances, such as changes in curriculum, in ways that continue to reveal a commitment to the underlying principles of assessment and the goal of the College to promote a culture of continuous improvement. |
