Welcome to Epicc!

Welcome to EPICC, the Electronic Portfolio Initiative at Cochise College. The primary purpose of this website is to help Cochise College faculty make the decision about implementing academic electronic portfolios district-wide. If the decision is made to implement electronic portfolios, this website will serve as a resource for faculty, administration, staff, and students of Cochise College. It will then be the place to learn about electronic portfolios, access templates for developing portfolios, get help with eportfolio development, and so on.

The Big Decision
We, who have been involved with investigating the rapidly emerging theory and practice of academic electronic portfolios and exploring the ways in which electronic portfolios may be integrated into the Cochise College curriculum, believe that the decision concerning whether Cochise should adopt electronic portfolios across the district is an extremely important one. The information, recommendations, and examples of Cochise College student portfolios made available on this website result from years of intense research, reflection, discussion, and work. To learn more about the background to the Electronic Portfolio Initiative at Cochise College and its activities, please visit the About EPICC page.

We realize that many different views on academic electronic portfolios and many different models of electronic portfolios exist world-wide. To learn more about electronic portfolios and the different ways in which they may be employed, please visit the About Eportfolios page. We are also well aware that different views on eportfolios exist at Cochise College. It is our hope that the decision concerning eportfolios will be based on solid understanding, full information, and thorough discussion of the eportfolio process and outcomes. For these reasons we urge everyone to read the proposal for implementing eportfolios at Cochise College, found on the Committee Recommendations page, very carefully.

To help make an informed decision about whether and how to implement eportfolios at Cochise College, please also check out the results of the three different Pilot Projects. On this page, you can read comments on the portfolio development process from students and instructors. You can also view examples of portfolios developed by Cochise College students. You are also invited to access free Open Source Portfolio software and experiment with it, perhaps using it to develop your own faculty portfolio. Please also visit the Frequently-Asked Questions page and the Resources page to become better informed about eportfolios and the way they may benefit Cochise College.

We urge you then to take the following steps to help make the decision whether to implement electronic portfolios at Cochise College:

  1. Spend some careful time reviewing the material on this website. Please:
    • Read the proposal for implementing electronic portfolios at Cochise.
    • Look at some student portfolios and read faculty reflections on using eportfolios in their classes.
    • Explore the other material on this site: the background to EPICC, the research on eportfolios, the portfolio development software available for everyone at Cochise College to use, frequently asked questions (and answers) about electronic portfolios, and more.
  2. Experiment with the electronic portfolio software available on the EPICC website. This is software from the Open Source Portfolio Initiative (OSPI) and is free and available to all Cochise College faculty, administration, staff, and students to use as they please. The product enables users to develop portfolios of many types. Faculty, for instance, may find it useful for developing the newly-required faculty portfolios. Instructors may use it, as many did during the Course-Specific Electronic Portfolio Project (CSEPP), to help their students develop portfolios in one or more of their classes. There is a brief guide available on this website to help you start using OSPI.
  3. Attend one of the upcoming voluntary “questions and answers” sessions to be held on both campuses to address questions and concerns about eportfolios and the proposal for implementing them district wide at Cochise College.
  4. Let your instructional managers and assistant deans know your thoughts on using eportfolios at Cochise before the Joint Instructional Managers (JIM) meeting on November 16, 2005, when this important decision will be made.

Please contact the EPICC group with any questions or comments about this website or the EPICC proposal.
