Get your start in emergency services and provide a valuable service to your community by training to become an emergency medical technician.

The Cochise College EMT course prepares you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic as required by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and the State of Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (ADHS-BEMS). Upon successful completion of the eight-credit course, you will have the skills to work as an ambulance attendant or to earn other occupational safety certifications.


The 8-credit Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT 174) course covers basic knowledge of the signs and symptoms of illness and injury, procedures associated with the provision of emergency medical care, basic legal responsibilities, anatomy and physiology, triage, patient assessment, and basic life support systems. Students desiring NREMT/ADHS-BEMS certification must complete the state-required hours of clinical experience with an emergency medical service provider of out-of-hospital emergency care. Curriculum meets the ADHS-BEMS guidelines and is approved by the State of Arizona and the National Registry of EMT's. An EMT refresher course (EMT 176)also is available.

Employment Outlook
This program prepares students to become employed as emergency medical technicians, and employment is found with emergency service providers and in hospitals.

Salary EMTs earn an average of $9 to $12 an hour, for an average annual salary of $18,000 to $25,000.

EMT 174 takes one semester (16 weeks)to complete and is offered in the fall and spring each
year.

Class Schedule
The classes are scheduled to meet the needs of the working adult.
• Classes meet two evenings a week, with a few Saturdays for labs.
• Classes are offered on theSierra Vista andDouglas Campusesin
the falland WilcoxCenter in the spring.
• Classes start at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.
• Labs may be longer and will include some Saturdays.
• Ambulance “ride time” will be scheduled during class.
