HLC: Question of the Month

Stacie Munger is co-chair of Cochise College's HLC 2006 steering committee. If you have a specific question about HLC, email Stacie at mungers@cochise.edu.

This month's question: How is the HLC aelf-study draft progressing?

Answer: Over the course of the past few months, Dave Pettes has dedicated innumerable hours to creating the self-study draft. On November 18, 17 members of the HLC Steering Committee gathered for more than three and a half hours to critique and comment on the draft in its latest incarnation. The committee was divided into four small groups - with a facilitator for each group - representing criteria one through four. The groups rotated to a different criterion approximately every 30 minutes, focusing their discussions on the draft’s fair representation of the College, and on the College’s perceived strengths, challenges, and recommendations for the future. This process, in addition to the scores of employees involved in the investigational process, is evidence that the report is truly a team document. The College is truly taking this process for what it is intended to be - a self-study, a self-assessment. Investigation and analysis have yielded a clear direction for the future and a deeper understanding of our commitment to fulfilling our mission.

Initial reviews have been positive. Several Steering Committee members commented that it was gratifying to finally see all the reports put together in one coherent document. Since the meeting on November 18, Dave has been virtually swamped with valuable information and insights being forwarded daily by Steering Committee members. An updated version is scheduled to be available to the Steering Committee in early December.
