Answers to Your Financial Aid Questions (FAQ's)

What is your federal school code?
Cochise College's federal school code is 001072. The FAFSA application lists the institution as Cochise College, Douglas, Arizona. This is correct; the school code is good for all Cochise College locations.

What is an award letter?
An award letter is a direct result of your completion of the financial aid process. Your financial need has been assessed using federally standardized calculations. Using these calculations, a “financial aid package” was established to assist you in covering normal costs at Cochise College. The award letter indicates the type and amount of funds you were awarded and contains important messages and instructions regarding these awards. You will receive your award letter through your Cochise College (CC) account.

How do I apply for the SEOG and LEAP grants?
When you apply for federal aid before the April 15 priority deadline, you also are applying for the SEOG and LEAP grants. These grants are supplemental money for “high-need” students. High-need students are students whose expected family contribution (EFC) is “0." These grants are awarded on a first-come basis to those students who meet the minimum requirements, have a low EFC and are Arizona residents.

How do I get the award?
Once you have been awarded, your account is checked for outstanding financial obligations to Cochise College. If you owe money to Cochise College, your financial aid will be applied directly to your account. Any remaining monies will be disbursed in check form or by direct deposit. If your award is sent to you through the mail, it will go to the address in the Cochise College admissions computer. It is the student's responsibility to keep his/her address current. Check your Cochise College account for award balances.

What are some things that can affect my award?
One of the most common reasons why your financial aid can be canceled is due to not meeting satisfactory academic progress requirements. Academic progress is reviewed at the end of each semester. Your award also may be affected if you live on or off campus or if you change your enrollment status.

But what if I need more money?
If you feel your financial aid award will not cover all of your educational costs, you may be eligible for an unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Another option may be the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), which is available to parents for dependent students. More information about these loan programs can be obtained at the Financial Aid Office or by looking at student loans on this website. If you have special circumstances that change your financial situation, we have an appeal process. Students encountering extreme changes in circumstances (such as death or illness) may discuss their financial situation with a financial aid staff member during office hours.

What does it mean if an asterisk appears next to the EFC figure?
The asterisk is followed by a code, which means you have been selected for a process called verification. You must provide certain financial documents to the financial aid technician. Until this process is completed, no financial aid can be paid.

What does it mean if a “C” appears next to the EFC figure?
A “C” means that there are problems with the financial aid application, which must be corrected before any financial aid can be paid. Some of these problems are a social security number mismatch, which can happen if you get married but do not change your name with the Social Security Administration. Contact the Financial Aid Office for the exact problem and what documents are needed for the correction.

What should I do if I have submitted a FAFSA for the current year but did not include Cochise College?
You can call the Central Processing System at (800) 4-FED-AID or (800) 433-3243 and request that they include Cochise College on your current student aid report. The Cochise College school code number is 001072. We should receive an electronic copy in about a week.

If I am transferring to Cochise College, how do I transfer my financial aid?
If you begin the year at another college or university and then wish to transfer to Cochise College, you need to notify the registrar or financial aid office at your prior school that you plan to transfer to Cochise College. Have your prior school cancel any awards that have not yet been paid. Then call (800) 4-FED-AID or (800) 433-3243 and request that they include Cochise College on your current student aid report. The Cochise College school code is 001072. We should receive an electronic copy in about a week. Contact the Financial Aid Office at Cochise College for any additional forms you may need.
