Cochise College welcomes all non-residents of the United States. We believe students from other countries bring cultural richness and global learning opportunities to our institution. In addition, by attending school here, you will be immersed in the English language and have the chance to experience the natural, historic and cultural attractions of the Old West and nearby Mexico.

What can an International Student Study?
International students may apply for one of two areas of study:

  • The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is for students who do not have college-level English skills, and
  • Many traditional academic programs lead to an associate degree preparing students for direct employment or transfer to a university.

International students who wish to enter CC are advised to file their applications and send official transcripts, certificates, diplomas and degrees three months in advance of the semester for which they seek admission. Those interested in studying aviation or nursing should contact those departments for more specific admissions requirements.

Beginning Your Classes
College entrance exams like the ACT, SAT or TOEFL are not required for admission.

All classes at Cochise College are given in English. If you need more language training in English you will be required to participate in our English Immersion Program.

Upon arrival at Cochise College, you will be given the English placement test to determine your English proficiency. If your English is very good, you may then take the native speaker tests in reading, writing and mathematics. The purpose of all this testing is simply to be sure you are in the correct level of course work so you will make the best use of your time and money.

You must take the English placement tests before registering for classes. After testing you will be ready to register for classes with the help of an advisor.

Orientation
In the second week of class, you will attend the International Student Orientation. This is a mandatory meeting in which we cover: academic and social life at college, understanding what is expected from F-1 students, and American ways.

English as a Second Language (ESL)/English Immersion
Cochise College offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the Douglas Campus and the Nogales/Santa Cruz Center. The ESL program helps students improve their English speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills and prepares them for college-level classes. Courses are offered in four levels: beginning, high beginning, intermediate, and the bridge semester, for students who want to continue in college-level studies. ESL courses are regularly available during the fall and spring semesters.

A six-week English Immersion program also is available during the summer on the Douglas Campus. Students enrolled in this intensive program may choose to take courses only in the morning, or all day.

Students enrolling in classes at the Douglas Campus may choose to live on campus, where they will have access to free tutoring; use of college services such as the library, gymnasium, swimming pool, computer labs, and dining hall; and social and cultural activities and day trips to sights of interest.

Financial Aid
There are no American government funds available for students of other countries. Students who are from U.S. territories are eligible for financial assistance.

Employment
International students should be financially prepared to pay tuition and other personal expenses while they are at Cochise College. F-1 full-time international students are permitted to work part time on campus; however, student employment is not guaranteed.

Dormitories/Residence Halls
Single students attending the Douglas Campus live in “quads:” two bedrooms with an adjoining bath. Apartments are available for families. Each residence hall lobby has new computers with Internet access available for student use. Every room has a phone line, where local calls and voice messaging are free. However, telephones are not provided. Students use calling cards for long-distance calls. Residence assistants provide weekend programming, and there is a van available Friday evening through Sunday evening to take students to town.

In order to apply for living quarters, fill out the housing application and send a housing deposit of U.S. $100. Applications must be received as early as possible, since they are processed by the date that the applications and deposits are received.
