Resumes

Writing a Resume
The word resume, derived from the Greek language, means summary. A resume is a summary of experience that is applicable to the job for which you are applying. It can seem overwhelming to put your life experience on paper, but it can mean the difference between gaining employment and being unemployed. Studies show that most employers spend about 10 seconds looking at a resume; so your resume has to present your information quickly, clearly, and efficiently. Resumes should scream ability; employers should be able to read the resume and know exactly what your skills are.

There are various types of resumes, but the most common are chronological and functional. A chronological resume is the resume seen most often. It is time-based and should be used when your education and work experience look good on paper in a sequential format. It should show upwardly mobile responsibilities without significant gaps in education or employment. A functional resume  is best for individuals who have gaps in employment or lack a cohesive work history. It is perfect for recent college graduates without a lot of work experience. This format forces the reader to focus on the skills that have been obtained through experience and/or education. Whichever resume type you decide to go with (and it can be a combination of the two) it should grab the attention of the employer.  Action words are a common way to show energy and enthusiasm for employment. For a list of common action words click here - Action Words.
