What They're Saying...
Heather Morrison Heather is the only community college student in Arizona - and one of only 25 in the nation - to receive the prestigious 2005 Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The scholarship provides up to $30,000 per year to students graduating from two-year institutions. Heather also was named to the All-Arizona First Team, which consists of the top 22 community college students in the state and which earned her a tuition waiver to complete her bachelor’s degree at any public university in Arizona. In fall 2005, she transferred to Northern Arizona University, where she will study physics and continue to care for her two sons. Her goal is to become a professor.
"I chose to attend a community college because it gave me the emotional, academic and financial support that I needed to re-enter college and turn my life around. My instructors not only had time to spend with me on my schoolwork, but they were able to get to know me as a person, and to be there for me when life got rough."
Charlie Simper A native of Holbrook, Ariz., Charlie dreamed of enrolling in the Cochise College aviation program since graduating from high school in 1996. When he received confirmation of both acceptance into the program and financial assistance, he packed his bags immediately. Since coming to Cochise in 2003, he's worked on campus with the Cochise College Foundation and the Aviation Department and served as a resident assistant and credentials evaluator. These jobs have opened his eyes to the power of success and ambition. Charlie's pursuing a license as a certified flight instructor, and he hopes to secure a position with a corporation or similar business as an aviator.
"I like the eclectic culture of Cochise College. We have students from Mexico, Asia, Africa, Spain and the Middle East. Plus, the Aviation Department is one of the best in the nation. I have met many other pilots who have attended Cochise, and they all say the same thing: 'I wouldn’t go anywhere else for my pilot training!'"
Amy Hansen Amy graduated from Buena High School in Sierra Vista and chose Cochise for its winning soccer program, as well as its educational value. At Cochise, she juggles soccer practice and travel, class make-up, a job as a resident assistant, and an outstanding academic record. She believes academics last a lifetime, and she plans to study pre-pharmacy after graduating from Cochise College.
"I'm able to have personal relationships with all of my teachers, and they all knew me on a first-name basis and recognize my hard work. Cochise has helped me complete a majority of the credits I need for pre-pharmacy and has provided me with a strong enough educational background that I am confident I will succeed wherever I go."
Mark Contreras A resident of Douglas, Ariz., Mark left the semiconductor industry to study aviation at Cochise College. After receiving his pilot’s license, he decided to pursue a degree in education. He completed the first two years of his degree at Cochise before transferring to the University of Arizona South, where he is working toward his bachelor’s degree. He has worked as a math tutor at Cochise College, tutoring 16 hours per week and spending the rest of his time on campus studying. Tutoring has strengthened his math skills and his people skills, and he expects it will help him as a math teacher.
“The atmosphere at Cochise College is nice. People are friendly; the administration and staff get to know you; and they’re all eager to help. Instructors are very willing to set aside time for students. It makes you feel at home.”
Selene Lopez Najera Selene is an international student from Codorba, Veracruz, Mexico, who moved to Cochise County to improve her English skills. Immersion in the English language has improved her reading, writing and speaking skills by leaps and bounds. Her service as Student Government social events coordinator and as Phi Theta Kappa honor society publicity coordinator complement her first college degree in touristic business management.
"I found that Cochise College had the entire package: a lot of options, a good quality education, and at the same time, it also is affordable. Attending Cochise College is the first step to get where I want to be in my future. It's giving me the tools to build a solid foundation to shape my career."
