The annual STEM Exploration Academy provides hands-on explorations in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for Cochise County high school freshmen and sophomores. Students meet for four complete days throughout the school year — two day-long workshops in the fall and two in the spring semesters. These workshops are offered on both the Douglas Campus and at the Sierra Vista Campus.
Each workshop is taught by instructors from Cochise College or Fort Huachuca. In a team setting, students explore various STEM areas, including physics, biology, math, computer science and engineering. Each team has projects to design and construct or problems to experiment with and solve, then the team tests, troubleshoots and eventually competes against or collaborates with other teams in a discussion using the theoretical principles and skills learned in the session.
The STEM Exploration Academy provides a rural population opportunities to explore and discover the STEM fields with college instructors or professionals. Many of the concepts and skills taught are cutting edge within STEM fields, using technology recently introduced and used by professionals in the field. The academy also brings high school students together from other small communities to interact with each other, as well as with college instructors and professionals on a college campus.
Cochise College provides accessible educational opportunities that are responsive to a diverse population and lead to constructive citizenship, meaningful careers and lifelong learning.
