Teach Online!
Cochise College continuously seeks qualified professionals to teach online classes. This page includes information about the employment process. However, if you have questions about employment at Cochise College as an online instructor, email George Self, director of the Online Campus, at selfg@cochise.edu.
Minimum Requirements The minimum requirements for teaching at Cochise College vary somewhat depending on the class and discipline in which you teach. In general, classes that transfer to the university require an instructor with a master's degree and 18 credits in the field being taught. For non-transfer classes, the instructor must meet the qualifications established by the various department chairs (for example, the computer information systems department has established qualifications for a UNIX instructor).
If you have questions concerning the requirements in your teaching field, contact the Online Campus.
Process In order to teach online for Cochise College, you need to follow these steps:
- Submit an application to the Cochise College Human Resources department. We always accept applications for associate faculty positions, even if none are listed as "open" when you apply. We will also need a copy of your college transcripts; however you do not need to provide official copies of your transcripts until you are actually hired for a teaching position. Thus, to start the process you may send whatever unofficial copies you have available.
- Contact the Online Campus via email to let us know of your interest. Please attach a resume or vita in your message to let me know what you may be interested in teaching.
- Instructor selection begins about one semester before class starts. That means that in January (the beginning of the spring term) instructors will be selected for the following fall term. If you send in your application in March, keep in mind that we will not be thinking about hiring instructors again until August, when instructors will be selected for the following spring.
- Before hiring you as an instructor, we will look at your online teaching credentials. We are interested to know if you have used Blackboard at other colleges or if you have completed, or are willing to complete, training offered by Cochise College in online teaching methods (see below). Of course, equivalent classes taken elsewhere may be acceptable. If you have questions, please contact the director of the Online Campus.
- The names of all faculty recommended for online classes are forwarded to the appropriate department chair for final approval. Before you can be hired to teach an online math class, for example, the chair of the math department must approve your application. The department chair will look at your resume or vita to determine if you are qualified in the discipline. Additionally, the chair may phone you for a telephonic interview or contact your references for more information.
Compensation Currently, we use the following compensation plan for our online instructors.
Instruction
- Up to 10 students: the class is either cancelled or pro-rated (your choice) at 1/10 the amount of regular compensation per student.
- From 10-14 students (inclusive): paid under the current regular compensation structure. Because your compensation depends on a number of factors, such as educational background and experience, exact dollar amounts are not available.
- From 15-18 students (inclusive): paid at 1.33 times the current regular compensation.
Note: classes are capped at 18. If more students desire to sign up, you are given the option of "splitting" and taking two classes.
Other Fees Cochise College offers payment for various "additional" tasks performed by our faculty. These are assigned by the director of the Online Campus and include the following:
- Mentoring. You can be appointed to mentor new faculty members and will receive a stipend for that work.
- Evaluation. Many of our classes are formally evaluated every semester. Evaluators are offered a small fee for that work.
Benefits As an associate faculty member of Cochise College, you are permitted to take any classes we offer tuition-free (up to nine credits per semester).
Faculty Training Before you can teach for Cochise College, you must provide evidence of satisfactory completion of an online faculty training program. Cochise College offers the following classes and you may need to take one or more in order to meet that requirement. The director of the Online Campus will be able to provide you more information about these classes and your specific requirements.
