What is RSS?

Q: What is RSS?
A. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing web content, such as news headlines. RSS feeds allow you to stay up to date with the latest information about Cochise College as it is published.

Q: How do I get the Cochise College RSS feeds?
A: First, you need an RSS reader (also called a news aggregator) that will displays news feeds.

Second, after installing or accessing an RSS reader, click on the orange XML button(s), which should either automatically add the sites to your RSS reader, or will bring you to a separate page which requires that you manually copy and then paste the page URL (web address) into your reader. Follow instructions for your particular RSS reader.

"MyYahoo!" and "My MSN" subscribers can now add RSS feeds directly to their personal page. Just click the buttons to add Cochise College news feeds to yours.

Some Internet browsers now incorporate RSS readers/aggregators such as Safari RSS for Mac OSX; and Firefox (Mac or PC) has an extension aggregator called Sage. Microsoft Internet Explorer is due to have a built-in RSS reader in the very near future.

Q: Does it cost anything?
A: RSS feeds are free, and many RSS readers are also free.

Q: What about my privacy? Am I giving away personal information when I sign up for an RSS feed?
A: Your privacy is protected. Clicking on the XML button allows you to receive a Cochise College news feed, but it does not provide the College with any information about you.

Q: How often will I get news from the RSS reader?
A: It depends on which RSS reader you choose and which RSS feeds you subscribe to. Some readers will let you know you've just received the latest feed in a pop-up window. With most readers, you can modify settings to determine how often it will retrieve the latest headlines: e.g. hourly, twice a day, daily.

Cochise College news feeds may be updated several times per week.
