Cochise College will hold its 54th Commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Douglas Campus.
Motorists should be aware of heavier-than-usual traffic in the area. Those attending graduation will be directed by campus security. Commencement exercises begin at 7 p.m., but the campus will start to fill with cars around 5 p.m.
Students completing their first and second years of the nursing program will participate in a pinning ceremony at the campus the evening prior.
This year, Cochise College will award approximately 1550 diplomas for the current academic year, and about 345 students are expected to participate in commencement ceremonies.
The student speaker at Commencement will be Rachel Hansen. Hansen is originally from Philadelphia and graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in Social Science with a concentration in history. She plans to continue her studies in history and public policy at the University of Arizona. Her ultimate goal is to attend law school to study constitutional and business law. In addition to her studies, she is a local real estate agent and president of Sierra Vista’s Industrial Development Authority. She is a wife to a military veteran and a mother to a bubbly one-year-old. “I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to address the Cochise College community at graduation,” Hansen said. “I am extremely thankful to every professor, staff member, and classmate – together, they made my student experience at Cochise College truly memorable.” Hansen was selected among the top finalists of graduates who entered the commencement speaker competition.
Live online streaming, accessed at the Cochise College website, will allow friends and relatives to see everything from the processional to the last graduate crossing the stage.
