America’s Opioid Epidemic and Cocaine Threat
with Thom Brown
The general narrative today is that fentanyl-laced heroin is driving the nation’s opioid overdose epidemic. In fact, the current drug problem is
far more complex. Opioids and cocaine are increasingly adulterated with multiple, highly toxic cutting agents. Unfortunately, these adulterants are not routinely tested by police forensic laboratories on seized materials or in addicts undergoing treatment. Failure to identify these hidden toxic adulterants can hinder accurate clinical diagnosis and misrepresentation of nation-wide drug epidemics, thereby effecting accurate policy and program responses.
