College hosts free Zine workshop and artist talk with award-winning author Josh Galarza

Article

Cochise College invites students, community members and art enthusiasts to attend a free Zine Workshop and artist talk featuring award-winning author and multidisciplinary visual artist Josh Galarza. Events will occur on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Douglas Campus at 12:15 p.m. and on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Sierra Vista Campus at 11 a.m.

The workshop introduces participants to the world of zines, short for “fanzines,”  a creative and accessible format for self-expression and storytelling. Attendees will learn the history of zines, explore content possibilities, and practice building their own publications. Each participant will leave with sample zines and an instructional handout for future projects.

“Zines are an affordable, self-sustaining way for people to share their voice, ideas, and artistry,” Jessamyn Snider, Spanish Instructor and Cultural Events Co-Coordinator, said. “They are ideal for creators of all backgrounds, from beginners to experienced artists.”

Josh Galarza, a longtime Montessori educator, writer, and visual artist, will lead the sessions. His debut novel, The Great Cool Ranch Dorito in the Sky (Henry Holt & Company), was a finalist for the 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and a winner of the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. He is an accomplished printmaker, book artist, and sculptor with teaching experience in creative writing and fine arts.
