Digital Media Arts student turns passion for design into career path

Article

Digital Media Arts (DMA) student, Veronika Colwell, has been able to implement her passion for design into a career plan. “I originally was going to go with [a] music [degree],” said Colwell. “But because I fell in love with graphic design, I decided to pursue that instead.” She is working toward earning an associate of applied science degree in digital media arts.

She was first introduced to digital media when she began taking graphic arts classes at Tombstone High School. Colwell learned quickly that this was something she enjoyed a lot. While she was still in high school, she took a dual enrollment math course at Cochise College, which naturally led to her learning about the DMA program.

According to Colwell, the DMA program is suitable for people who have a creative mindset. She has noticed that the majority of DMA students already have a love for the program and the material that they learn in it. “It’s good if you at least know a little bit about what you’re doing,” she said. “. . . That way you won’t get intimidated as easily.”

Something positive Colwell has experienced with the DMA program is a new kind of community. She said, “Everyone is so welcoming. I felt like in almost every class I’ve been in everyone is kind of like family. It’s easy to get close pretty quickly.” Many people have similar experiences to Colwell, and the college is often praised for its welcoming environment for students, staff, and faculty.

Some of Colwell’s favorite classes she has taken are Digital Video Production and Computer Animation. She shared that she has had a fun time building skills and learning new techniques in those classes.

After completing her associate degree, Colwell plans to transfer to the University of Arizona to earn a bachelor’s degree. After graduation, she hopes to work as a video editor or an interior designer. Her interest in interior design comes from her personal experience. She has had experience building various structures and has helped her grandfather build an entire band room.

Colwell has been able to incorporate her hobbies and explore her interests through the DMA program. She shared that she has also learned to have more patience. “[Have] patience toward your tools,” said Colwell. “Always expect something to go wrong.” Because of her new approach, she has learned to plan for any possible outcome. This has taught her to be resilient and look at new ways to problem-solve.

Colwell said her experience as a DMA student at Cochise College has been a good one. She has been able to pursue her interests and make meaningful connections.
