Cochise College joined colleges and universities across the United States in celebrating National TRiO Day in late February, while also marking 25 years of TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) at the college.
Established by Congress in 1986, National TRiO Day encourages communities to focus on educational access, academic persistence, and the power of college opportunity to change lives and strengthen the nation.
At Cochise College, TRiO Student Support Services hosted a TRiO Day celebration, bringing
together students, faculty, and staff to recognize student achievement. The event
included food, games, and music while providing an opportunity to reflect and understand
the importance of the transformative impact of the Federal TRiO Programs and honoring
the achievements of first-generation students pursuing higher education.
“Our TRiO Scholars are resilient, driven, and determined to succeed,” said Angie Vega,
Director for TRiO SSS. “National TRiO Day is an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments,
acknowledge their hard work, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every student
has the support and resources to achieve their academic and career goals.”
Cochise College currently serves approximately 165 students through TRiO SSS. The
program provides academic advising, mentoring, college readiness services, and career
development opportunities for eligible students.
The Federal TRiO Programs were first created through the Higher Education Act to remove barriers to postsecondary education. Today, TRiO programs serve more than 800,000 students nationwide each year, including middle school, high school and college students, adult learners and veterans.
National TRiO Day is observed annually to recognize the impact of these programs and to encourage communities to support educational access, student success, and economic mobility through higher education.
