Cochise Newsroom
By James Perey, Ed.D.
On May 15, Cochise College celebrated more than a commencement ceremony. We celebrated
possibility, perseverance and the courage to create a future filled with purpose.
For many graduates, the moment they crossed the stage at the Sierra Vista Campus represented
years of sacrifice, uncertainty and determination. Some balanced full-time jobs. Others
raised children while attending classes. Some returned to school after decades away
from the classroom. This year’s graduates ranged in age from 15 to 69, proving that
education is not defined by age, background or circumstance. It is defined by the
willingness to keep moving forward.
Commencement is often viewed as the end of a journey. In reality, it is the beginning.
The word itself means “to start” or “to begin.” Education was never meant to be a
finish line. It is preparation for a lifetime of learning, growth and leadership.
This year marked a historic milestone for the college as we celebrated the first graduates
of our Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Leadership programs.
These students are not simply earning degrees. They are stepping into a rapidly changing
world that needs thoughtful leaders, compassionate caregivers, and people willing
to solve complex challenges.
The future they enter will continue to evolve. Careers will transform faster than
ever before. Success will not belong only to those with knowledge and skills. It will
belong to those who remain curious, adaptable and committed to serving others.
That is why the true value of higher education extends far beyond a diploma. College
teaches students how to think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate with others
and navigate uncertainty with confidence. These skills will matter long after textbooks
are closed and classes are completed.
This year’s student speaker, Shawn Harrigan, reminded us of what perseverance and
service are. As a mother, volunteer and advocate for newly disabled individuals, she
demonstrated that education is not only about personal advancement. It is also about
lifting others along the way. Her story reflects the spirit of community colleges
across the nation: opportunity, resilience, and transformation.
As graduates move into the next chapter of their lives, I encourage them to remember
never stop learning. The world will continue to change, and lifelong learning will
remain one of the most valuable tools they possess.
At Cochise College, we often say we are “Creating Futures.” This year’s graduates
are proof of that. Their futures will not be defined solely by where they come from,
but by what they choose to build moving forward.
Caps are off. The future is waiting. Now the adventure truly begins.
