Humberto Lopez began working full time at a young age to help support his mother and
five siblings after the untimely passing of his father. He graduated from Nogales
High School and enrolled at Cochise College, graduating in 1967 and transferring to
the University of Arizona.
In honor of his professional and philanthropic achievements, Lopez was inducted into
the Cochise College Hall of Fame in 2026. During his induction remarks, he pledged to contribute $250,000 for need-based scholarships
if the college could raise that amount by the end of the year.
"I was fortunate enough to receive help when I attended Cochise College," Lopez says, though he received loan assistance that he later paid back.
The LIFT (Local Investment for Transformation) campaign seeks to match Lopez's pledge.
Your generosity means local students have opportunities to unlock their own success
that they may not otherwise be able to afford. Many Cochise College students are the
first in their families to pursue higher education, juggle multiple priorities other
than college, lack the financial capacity to earn a credential in a timely manner.

Humberto Lopez began working full time at a young age to help support his mother and
five siblings after the untimely passing of his father. He graduated from Nogales
High School and enrolled at Cochise College, graduating in 1967 and transferring to
the University of Arizona.
Lopez began his career as a certified public accountant developing expertise in real
estate with a California firm. Eight years after graduating from Cochise College,
he founded HSL Properties, a real estate company with diversified assets of approximately
$2 billion; HSL is the largest owner of hotels and apartments in the Tucson area.
Lopez has also served on the boards of a number of publicly traded and non-profit
organizations, as well as in governmental appointments.
Apart from his business success, Lopez's spirit of generosity has aided countless
organizations and impacted thousands of lives. He formed the non-profit H.S. Lopez
Family Foundation in 2004. The foundation has contributed more than $20 million to
many non-profit organizations with an emphasis in health, welfare and education. In
2017, he founded the Center of Opportunity, a Tucson homeless shelter where dozens
of local non-profits provide needed services at one campus.
